Purchase Scams: How to Recognise and Avoid Fake Sellers

17 June 2025

Purchase scams are a widespread form of fraud where criminals pose as private sellers, advertising goods that simply do not exist. Victims are lured in by appealing offers, often involving heavily discounted prices on popular items such as cars, electronics, or even holiday packages.

How Do Purchase Scams Work?

Fraudsters typically advertise fake products on platforms like eBay, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, or even through clone websites designed to closely mimic genuine retailers. These scams can appear highly convincing, with professional-looking listings and persuasive communications.

Victims are encouraged to make payments quickly, often through direct bank transfers, PayPal friends and family payments, or even cryptocurrency wallets — methods that make it difficult to trace or recover the funds once sent.

After the payment is made, the scammer simply disappears. The goods are never delivered, leaving victims with no product and little chance of recourse without proper support.

Warning Signs of a Purchase Scam

Be alert to these warning signs:

  • Deals that seem too good to be true — particularly on high-value items.
  • Sellers pushing for fast payment outside of secure platforms.
  • Requests for direct transfers instead of secure payment methods that offer buyer protection.
  • Websites with minor spelling mistakes or unusual payment options.

What To Do If You Suspect a Purchase Scam

If you believe you have been targeted:

  • Stop any further payments immediately.
  • Report the incident to the platform used, Action Fraud, and your bank.
  • Keep all records of communications, listings, and payment details.
  • Seek legal advice to explore your options for recovering your money.
