Romance Scams: How Fraudsters Target Victims

9 June 2025

Romance scams are a cruel form of fraud where criminals prey on emotional vulnerabilities to steal money. Often posing as potential partners, fraudsters use deceit and manipulation to create fake romantic relationships, leaving their victims heartbroken and financially devastated.

How Do Romance Scams Work?

Fraudsters typically set up fake profiles on dating websites, social media platforms, or messaging apps. They take time to build trust, engaging in regular and heartfelt communication to form what feels like a genuine emotional connection.

A common feature of these scams is that the fraudster claims to be living or working abroad, which conveniently explains why they cannot meet in person. Once trust is established, they invent emergencies — such as medical bills, travel expenses, or urgent investment opportunities like cryptocurrency — and request money from the victim.

The scammer often promises to repay the money soon or suggests that it will help them finally meet in person. Sadly, once the victim either becomes suspicious or can no longer send funds, the fraudster will vanish without warning, cutting off all contact.

Warning Signs of a Romance Scam

Be cautious if you notice any of the following:

  • Someone professes strong feelings unusually quickly.
  • Requests for money — particularly for emergencies, travel, or investments.
  • Excuses for not meeting in person — such as living abroad or having complicated work commitments.
  • Inconsistent details in their stories or reluctance to share verifiable information.

What To Do If You Suspect a Romance Scam

If you believe you are being targeted:

  • Stop sending money immediately.
  • Cease communication with the suspected scammer.
  • Report the incident to Action Fraud and your bank.
  • Seek legal advice to explore options for recovering any losses.
